A red dot puts a single aiming point on one focal plane with the target. You keep both eyes open, you focus on the target, and you aim faster than with iron sights. On a pistol a red dot also makes precise shots easier at longer distances. You can choose red dots from Holosun, Vector Optics, Olight, Shield Sights, Sightmark, Steiner, Toni System, Vortex, Firefield and C-More, for pistols, rifles and shotguns.
Red dots for pistols
A pistol red dot sits on the slide, on an Optics Ready plate or on a red dot mount. The plate or mount must match the footprint of the red dot, which is the pattern of screws and recoil lugs on its bottom. The footprint is the first thing to check. Find red dots by footprint:
-
Red dots with Trijicon RMR footprint, for example the Holosun 407C, 507C and 507 Comp, the Olight Osight and the Vector Optics Frenzy-X.
-
Red dots with Shield RMSc footprint, for example the Shield RMSc, RMSx and SMS2, the Olight Osight K and SE, and the Vortex Defender CCW.
-
Red dots with Holosun K-Series footprint, for example the Holosun 407K, 507K, EPS Carry and SCS Carry.
-
Red dots with Leupold DPP footprint, for example the Holosun SCS 320 and Vortex Defender ST and XL.
-
Red dots with Docter footprint, for example the Vector Optics Frenzy 1x17x24 and Sightmark Mini Shot M-Spec.
-
Red dots with C-More RTS footprint, for example the C-More RTS3B V2 and Toni System ZR, ZV and ZX.
-
Red dots with Holosun 509T footprint and Red dots with Aimpoint Acro footprint, such as the Holosun 509T and Steiner MPS.
Some red dots fit a CZ Optics Ready cut without a plate. See Red dots with direct fit for CZ P-10 Optics Ready and Red dots with direct fit for CZ Shadow 2 Optics Ready. For the Shadow 2 Carry and P-09 Nocturne, see Red dots with direct fit for CZ Shadow 2 Carry and Red dots with direct fit for CZ P-09C Nocturne.
Red dots for rifles and shotguns
On a long gun the red dot sits on a Picatinny rail. See Red dots with Picatinny base. You can choose compact red dots such as the Holosun 510C, Steiner T1Xi or the Vector Optics Maverick and Scrapper series, and larger reflex sights with a bigger window, such as the Vector Optics Nautilus and Omega. Pistol red dots can also go on a rail with a Picatinny mount, see Picatinny red dot mounts.
Open or enclosed
An open red dot has a single lens and the LED sits in the open in front of it. It is small and light. An enclosed red dot has the LED inside a sealed housing, so rain, snow or dirt cannot block it. Enclosed models include the Holosun EPS, EPS Carry, AEMS and 509T. For carry and duty use, many shooters prefer an enclosed sight. For sport shooting, an open red dot with a large window is common.
Dot size and reticle
- A 2 or 3 MOA dot covers little of the target, so it suits precise shots.
- A 6 MOA dot is easier to find fast, for example on the Holosun 407Comp or the 6 MOA Osight SE.
- A multi-reticle system lets you switch between a dot, a circle and a dot with a circle. For example, the Holosun 507C X3 offers a 2 MOA dot and a 32 MOA circle.
Many models come in red, green or gold. Green and gold can be easier for some eyes to see in bright daylight.
Features that matter
-
Shake Awake: the red dot turns off when it is still and turns on when you move the gun. This saves battery. Most Holosun pistol red dots have it, and so do models from other makers, such as the Firefield RapidStrike.
-
Solar backup: a solar panel powers the dot in good light or supports the battery. Many Holosun models, the Sightmark Volta and Mini Shot M2 Solar, and the Vector Optics Frenzy-X MRS Solar have it.
-
Side battery tray: on models like the Holosun 407C X3 you change the battery without removing the red dot, so you keep your zero.
-
Glass lens: Shield Sights offers glass versions of models like the RMSc, RMSx and SMS2.
-
Titanium housing: for example on the Holosun 508T and 509T, and the Vector Optics Frenzy-X Titanium.
Check the window size, the battery type and the waterproof rating in the specifications. For example, the Holosun 507 Comp Ronin has a 22.1 x 27.9 mm window, larger than the 17.0 x 23.1 mm window of the 507C X3.
Battery
Most pistol red dots run on a CR1632, CR2032 or CR1620 coin cell. Keep a spare battery of the right type in your range bag. The battery life depends on the model and the brightness setting. For example, the Holosun 407C X3 and 507C X3 are rated for up to 100 000 hours, the Holosun EPS Carry for up to 50 000 hours and the Vortex Defender ST and XL for up to 25 000 hours. Shake Awake and solar backup make the battery last even longer. If you change batteries often, a side battery tray saves you from removing the red dot and zeroing it again.
Magnifiers
A magnifier sits behind the red dot and enlarges the target when you need it. You can choose the Sightmark T-3, T-5 and XTM-3 magnifiers with a flip to side mount, the Vector Optics Paragon 3x18 and 5x30 and Maverick-III 3x22, or the Holosun 510C with the HM3X magnifier as a set.
Accessories
To protect your red dot, see Red dot covers. If you lose a screw, you can get spare screws for the Holosun K-series footprint, CZ Optics Ready plates and red dot installation. For plates and mounts, see Optics Ready plates and Red dot mounts.
Frequently asked questions
Which red dots will fit my CZ pistol?
It depends on your plate or mount. Find the footprint of your Optics Ready plate or red dot mount, then choose a red dot with the same footprint. On an Optics Ready CZ you can also choose a direct fit red dot.
Can I mount a red dot on my CZ at home?
Yes. You need no gunsmith.
- Fit the Optics Ready plate or the red dot mount.
- Screw the red dot onto it with a drop of threadlocker on each screw.
- Tighten the screws to the recommended torque.
- Zero the red dot at the range.
Should I choose an open or enclosed red dot for my CZ?
It depends on how you use the pistol. Choose an enclosed red dot for carry and outdoor use, because dirt and rain cannot block the LED. Choose an open red dot for sport shooting, where a large window and low weight matter more.
Should I choose a red or green dot for my CZ?
It depends on your eyes and the light. Red is the most common. Green and gold can be easier to see in bright daylight. Many models come in more than one colour, so you can choose the same red dot in the colour you prefer.
